Thankful Challenge #14 - One year ago today the world lost while heaven gained a dear soul. On November 14, 2012, my friend Esther crossed the finish line in her courageous battle with cancer. She was a brilliant, kind, and creative person who made you feel happy just by being around her. She loved children and taught generations of first graders how to read. (She also taught many novice teachers like myself how to teach!) She made amazing tomato sandwiches and grew incredibly beautiful gardens year after year. I had the opportunity to visit with Esther about 2 1/2 weeks before she died, and I was so grateful be able to thank her for her friendship and tell her that I love her.

Today I am thankful for the gift of knowing Esther and being her friend. I look forward to sharing many more laughs with her in heaven someday!
